How to Choose a Coaching Institute or Tuition Centre
By the TownTrove team
Coaching is a big investment of money and, more importantly, of a student’s time. Large hoardings and toppers’ photos make every institute look the same, so it helps to know what to actually compare.
Be clear about the goal
A tuition centre for school subjects, a competitive exam coaching institute and a skill course such as spoken English or coding each need different things. Write down the goal, the exam or class, and how many months you have. This narrows the options quickly.
Attend a demo class
Almost every good institute allows one or two free demo classes. Use them. Notice whether the teacher explains concepts or only dictates notes, whether students ask questions freely, and whether doubts are actually solved.
Ask about batch size and doubt support
- How many students are in one batch?
- Is there a separate time for doubt clearing?
- Are tests held regularly, and are answer sheets discussed afterwards?
- Who teaches: the senior faculty in the brochure, or junior teachers?
Read results claims carefully
Toppers on posters may have studied at the institute for only a short crash course. Ask how many students from a regular batch cleared the exam, not just the best ranks. An honest institute will give you a straight answer.
Understand fees and refunds in writing
Ask for the total fee, the instalment plan, and what is included, such as study material and test series. Most importantly, ask for the refund policy in writing before paying. Avoid paying the full year’s fee upfront if monthly or term-wise payment is possible.
Think about travel and safety
A long daily commute eats into study time and energy. For younger students, check the timings of the last batch, how students reach home and whether parents can contact the centre easily.
