How to Choose a Good Salon or Beauty Parlour Near You

By the TownTrove team

Most people find their salon by walking past it. That works, but it is also how people end up with a bad haircut, a skin reaction after a facial, or a bill that is double what they expected. A few minutes of checking before you sit in the chair saves a lot of regret.

This guide covers what to look at when you are choosing a salon or beauty parlour in an Indian city, whether you need a quick trim, bridal makeup or a skin treatment.

Start with what you actually need

A neighbourhood parlour that does threading, waxing and basic haircuts very well may not be the right place for hair colouring or keratin treatments. Chemical services need trained staff and good products. Decide first whether you need a routine service or a specialist one, and look for places that clearly list that service.

Check hygiene before anything else

Hygiene is the one thing you should never compromise on. On your first visit, look around for a minute before you agree to any service.

  • Fresh towel and a clean neck strip for every customer.
  • Combs, brushes and scissors cleaned or kept in a steriliser between clients.
  • Disposable or new wax strips and spatulas, never double-dipped into the wax pot.
  • New blades for shaving and fresh needles or threads for threading.
  • Clean wash basins, floors and chairs, and staff washing hands between customers.

Ask about the products

You are allowed to ask which brand of hair colour, bleach or facial kit will be used. A good salon will tell you without hesitation and will usually open a sealed pack in front of you for chemical services. If you have sensitive skin, ask for a patch test 24 to 48 hours before colouring or bleaching.

Understand the price before the service

Many disputes at salons are about the bill, not the service. Ask for the full price, including any “add-ons” such as hair wash, blow-dry or a mask, before you start. If the salon has a printed or displayed rate card, take a photo of it. Packages can be good value, but only if you will actually use every service in them.

Judge the staff, not just the interior

A fancy interior does not guarantee skill. Ask who will do your service and how long they have been doing it. For haircuts, a good stylist will ask about your face shape, hair type and how much time you spend styling every day. If they start cutting without asking anything, that is a warning sign.

Use reviews and photos carefully

Look for recent reviews that mention specific services and staff names, not just “nice place”. Photos of real work, such as before-and-after pictures, are more useful than stock images. On TownTrove you can check the address, timings and contact the salon on WhatsApp to ask about prices before visiting.

For bridal and event makeup

  • Book a trial session at least two to four weeks before the event.
  • Ask for the full list of products used and whether airbrush or HD makeup costs extra.
  • Confirm in writing the date, reporting time, number of people covered and any travel charges.
  • Clarify the advance amount and the cancellation terms.

Common questions

How do I know if a salon is hygienic?

Look for fresh towels for each customer, sterilised tools, single-use wax strips and spatulas, new blades, and staff who wash their hands between clients.

Should I do a patch test before hair colour?

Yes. Ask for a small patch test 24 to 48 hours before colouring or bleaching, especially if you have sensitive skin or have never used that product before.
