How to Pick a Safe and Clean Budget Hotel

By the TownTrove team

A budget stay can be perfectly comfortable if you check a few things before booking and on arrival. Here is what experienced travellers look at.

Location matters more than the lobby

A slightly costlier hotel close to where you need to be often saves more in auto and cab fares than it costs. Check the walking distance to the main road, and whether the area feels safe after dark.

Read recent reviews

Focus on reviews from the last few months. Look for comments about cleanliness, water, noise and staff behaviour. A few bad reviews are normal; the same complaint repeated many times is a warning.

Call before booking

  • Confirm the price for your dates and whether taxes and breakfast are included.
  • Ask about check-in and check-out times and early check-in charges.
  • Ask which ID proofs are accepted. Many hotels need a government photo ID for every adult guest.
  • Ask whether couples or local residents are allowed, as rules differ between hotels.

Check the room before you settle in

  • Clean bedsheets, towels and bathroom.
  • Hot water, working lights, fan or AC, and charging points.
  • Locks on the door and windows, and a peephole or chain.
  • Fire exit route on your floor.

Stay safe

Keep valuables locked or with you, share your hotel name with family, and avoid telling strangers your room number. If anything feels wrong with the room, ask to change it immediately, before you unpack.
