Buying Electronics: Local Store or Online?
By the TownTrove team
Online sales are hard to ignore, but local stores still win in many situations. The right choice depends on the product, your budget and how much after-sales support you need.
When a local store is better
- You want to see and compare products in person, like TV screens or the feel of a phone.
- The product needs installation, such as an AC, a washing machine or a water purifier.
- You want the product today.
- You value a person you can go back to if something goes wrong.
When online can be better
For well-known products with a fixed model number, such as a specific phone or laptop, online sale prices can be lower. Check the seller’s ratings and return policy, not just the product rating.
Negotiate politely in stores
Local stores can often match or come close to online prices, or add free installation, accessories or an extended warranty. Show the online price politely and ask what they can offer.
Always check these, wherever you buy
- A proper GST invoice with the model and serial number.
- The manufacturer’s warranty, and how to register it.
- Sealed box, and IMEI or serial number matching the box and invoice.
- Who to contact for installation and service.
Watch out for grey-market products
An unusually low price can mean an imported product without Indian warranty. Ask directly whether the product has an official Indian warranty, and check the warranty terms on the brand’s website.
